Abstract

1365010 Purification of phosphoric acid USS ENGS & CONSULTANTS Inc 29 March 1972 [29 March 1971] 14873/72 Heading C1A Iron aluminium, magnesium and organic impurities are removed from wet-process phosphoric acid obtained by digesting phosphate rock with sulphuric acid to form a slurry comprising phosphoric acid, calcium sulphate and sulphuric acid and separating the slurry into a solid phase and an aqueous, liquid phase, using a process comprising (a) concentrating the aqueous liquid until it contains at least 50 wt. per cent P2O5, (b) extracting the concentrated aqueous liquid phase with a solvent for phosphoric acid, the solvent being selected from n-hexanol, nheptanol, n-octanol and iso-octanol and mixtures thereof so that at least 50 wt. per cent of the P2O5 in the aqueous liquid phase is transferred to the solvent phase and at least 50 weight per cent of the iron, aluminium and magnesium originally present remain in the aqueous liquid phase, (c) stripping the phosphoric acid rich solvent phase with water so that at least 90 wt. per cent of the P2O5 in the solvent phase is transferred to the aqueous phase, (d) recycling the stripped solvent from step (c) to step (b), and (e) recovering the purified phosphoric acid.
