Abstract
1386291 Manufacturing phosphoric acid and gypsum KNAUF WESTDEUTSCHE GIPSWERKE Gebr 1 March 1972 [2 March 1971 21 Feb 1972] 9585/72 Heading C1A Phosphoric acid and gypsum are produced by digesting rock phosphate with sulphuric acid and (a) filtering the digestion products to remove the phosphoric acid to separate the gypsum, collecting the pre-filtrate and excess acid over that removed and recycling it to the digestion process and (b) displacing the phosphoric acid from the gypsum of step (a) by washing the gypsum with an alkali metal silicofluoride solution (e.g. by suspending the gypsum in a hot wash solution and separating organic impurities by flotation) and recycling the wash filtrate to the digestion process, (c) washing the gypsum from step (b) to remove alkali metal silicofluoride using a hot wash solution (e.g. 70- 100‹ C.) of alkali metal silicofluoride which is saturated with silicofluoride when cold, removing the purified gypsum and the mother liquor which is cooled, excess silicofluoride separated off and recycled. The gypsum from step (c) can be further purified by washing with water the wash filtrate being recycled to step (c). The excess silicofluoride may be separated from the mother liquor of step (c) by passing through a cooled vacuum crystallizer (e.g. 10-30‹ C. for 1-10 hours residence time) and the cold saturated silicofluoride solution reheated and used in step (c) or recycled directly to step (b) after which it is cooled, the excess alkali metal silicofluoride separated therefrom and the wash filtrate recycled to the digestion process. A stoichiometric equivalent of silicic acid or a reactive silicate may be added to the digestion process to ensure conversion of all fluorine values in the rock phosphate to fluosilicic acid or salt thereof.
