Abstract

319,225. Critchlow, W. G. May 18, 1928. Charge, moistening; induction pipes, extra air valves and fittings for. - A device adapted to admit water vapour with or without air to the mixture passing to the engine comprises a chamber 24 connected by a conduit 45 to a flange 46 secured between the carburettor outlet 20 and the induction pipe 47, water vapour being supplied to the chamber through an inlet 25 connected to the overflow pipe of the radiator through a moisture trap provided with a gravity-closed valve. The chamber 24 is provided with a central tube 33 communicating with the conduit 45 and provided with a transverse partition 39, a large perforation 40 and a small perforation 41 being provided in the tube respectively above and below the partition. A spring-loaded suction-actuated air inlet valve 36 is provided at the upper end of the tube 33, the air admitted when the valve is opened passing through the perforation 40 and being drawn along with water vapour through the perforation 41 into the outlet conduit 45, which is provided with an additional air inlet port 42 controlled by a manually-operated ported ring 43. The outlet 48 of the conduit 45 terminates in a depression 49 through which condensed fuel drains into the conduit 45 when the engine is stopped, this fuel acting as a reserve for starting. A gauze screen 50 is provided on the carburettor side of the flange 46. In a modification, the additional air is admitted to the conduit 45 through a rotary ported tube either manually operated from a distance through a flexible cable or automatically-controlled by a piston operated by the pressure of the exhaust gases, the inlet of the tube being provided with a gauze filter and a manually-operated hit-and-miss valve.
