316,962. Carpmael, A., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). May 7, 1928. Samples furnished. Carbazole derivatives.-1-aminocarbazole and derivatives thereof are prepared from 1-hydroxy carbazole and its derivatives by the customary methods, for example by heating with ammonium bisulphite solution under pressure. In place of ammonium bisulphite solution aqueous solutions of zinc chluride ammonia, ammonium chloride and ammonia or sodium bisulphite and ammonia may be used. In examples substances prepared are 1-aminocarbazole from 1-hydroxycarbazole and 3 :-6-dibromo-1-aminocarbazole from 3 : 6-dibromo-1-hydroxycarbazole (prepared by treating 1-hydroxycarbazole with bromine in glacial acetic acid or carbon disulphide, preferably with the addition of a trace of iodine and in the presence of sunlight).
