Abstract

316,385. Martin, V. J. June 18, 1928. Rudders ; screw propellers.-A rudder or propeller is arranged beneath a water-tight trunk or casing in the vessel which trunk extends from the lower plating to a convenient height above the water line and a filling piece is provided which can be slidably installed within and in close contact with the trunk so as to fully occupy the opening and form a continuation of the skin surface of the vessel when in its lowest position. The trunk B has a framed filling member L with a central shaft K. Beneath this member is a rudder E, the spindle H of which passes up through the shaft K. In this application the sides of the trunk are approximately rectangular and the filling member L fits them closely when slidden into place. The lower edge M is shaped so that when in its lowest position it fairs up with the skin plating D. For raising the filler piece L, eye bolts and like tackle are employed, and if desired removable guides or stanchions may be fitted on the deck. When the rudder is being raised its tiller or other suitable part is locked to the filler L so as to be correctly positioned for passing through the trunk. Instead of the rudder a screw propeller and its driving mechanism may be mounted beneath the trunk.
