Abstract

509,607. Stabilizing ships. STEINEN, C. VON DEN. Jan. 18, 1938, No, 1683. Convention date. Jan. 18, 1937. [Classes 113 (i) and 114] A ship has situated at one or both ends a propeller producing its thrust transverse to its axis of rotation, this axis being placed so as to be either horizontal or inclined to the vertical. The direction of the thrust of the propeller is controlled so that it resists pitching movements. In one form, a Voith Schneider is mounted with its axis generally vertical, but capable of being pivoted about an axis 3 by a pinion 7 engaging an arcuate rack 8. When inclined, the propeller thrust 9 has a horizontal propelling component 10 and a vertical stabilizing component 11. The propeller is inclined automatically to produce a thrust proportional to the pitching moment. In an alternative construction, the propeller is mounted on a fixed horizontal axis. In a further modification, the propeller is used in conjunction with a pump-controlled tank at the opposite end of the ship. Specification 484,294 is referred to.
