Abstract
315,721. British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., (Assignees of Wantz, J. B.). July 16, 1928, [Convention date]. R÷ntgen-ray tubes.-The anode of a R÷ntgenray tube is cooled by the natural circulation, which may be aided mechanically, of mercury between a heat-radiating device and a chamber located within the anode and partitioned off at the target end thereof, the cooled mercury entering the said chamber so as to impinge against the anode wall adjacent to the target. A tube 12, a transformer, and a radiating system 27 are immersed in oil in a tank 10. A hollow anode 14 is sealed to a glass arm 19 by a sleeve 17, Fig. 2, and a seal 18. It is provided with interior radial corrugations 39, Fig. 2, or with longitudinal corrugations, and is divided by means of a partition 22. The generation of heat at the anode causes the circulation of mercury through a reservoir 23, a pipe 24, by means of which cooled mercury is directed onto the back of the target 15, a return pipe 25 and a radiating system 27. An expansion device 28 is provided in the member 27. Current is supplied to the transformer primary 33 through an adjustable tapping 32 and an auto-transformer 31, and to the primary 36 of a cathode transformer through a rheostat 35.
