Abstract

445,831. Discharge devices. JENAER GLASWERK SCHOTT & GEN., Otto-Schott- Strasse, Jena, Germany. Dec. 27, 1935, No. 35813. Convention date, Dec. 31, 1934. [Class 39 (i)] A gas or vapour discharge device, e.g. a mercury rectifier, provided with a glass container, is arranged in a cooling medium, contained in a receiver a, in such manner that the condensing chamber b projects above the level of the liquid and is surrounded by a hood c, the open and lower end of which is immersed in the liquid, and circulation of the liquid through the hood is ensured by reducing the air pressure in the hood below that over the level of the liquid which is located outside the hood. The liquid may be circulated in a closed circuit, which includes a recooling device, by means of a pump. A continuous supply of fresh cooling means may be supplied to a jet pump g, which ensures the circulation of the cooling medium through the hood. The cooling means may be maintained in the hood when the pump is stopped by closing valves in the connecting pipes and by locating the pressure aperture of the pump g below the level of the liquid in the receiver. The anode arms e are maintained at a higher temperature by guiding the cooling means to the bottom of the receiver by means of a pipe h, and by arranging the outflow pipe d below the arms. A number of discharge tubes may be arranged in one or in separate receivers, and all the hoods are connected to one pump. The anode connecting leads are surrounded by glass sleeves f and the supply wires of the auxiliary electrodes are insulated from the water, which may be at cathode potential. The supply of cooling medium may be controlled in dependence upon the temperature thereof, or upon the load, and the device may be automatically disconnected from the supply when the cooling is too intense or is insufficient. When the temperature of the cooling medium drops below a predetermined value it may be heated automatically. In another form, cooling means may be supplied to the top of the hood after the air has been exhausted.
