Low-pressure metallic-vapour apparatus.- Vapour-electric devices such as mercury-vapour rectifiers are provided with an anode 13, Fig. 1, independently cooled for example, surrounded by a batile 15, Figs. 1 and 2, forming a cooling chamber 17 for circulating a cooling medium, the anode temperature being thus controlled and the vapour pressure near the active anode surface being maintained below that at which " arcback '' is likely to occur. The temperature of the device is controlled by circulating a cooling medium 5 in contact with the outer wall 2 from an inlet pipe 7 at the top to an outlet 8 at the bottom so that cooling is greatest at the top, and the mercury cathode may be cooled independently by circulating cooling medium 6 in contact with the supporting insulated wall 4. The top of the container supporting the insulated anodes 13 may be cooled by fluid supplied through the pipe 7 and through an annular opening 11 and removed through a pipe 12. Each baffle 15 has an opening 16 facing the wall 2 and a cylindrical cooling chamber 17 with vertical partitions 20 extending alternately from the top and bottom to circulate the cooling medium to and fro from the top to the bottom of the chamber 17, three chambers 17 corresponding to three anodes being provided with common inlet and outlet pipes.
