Abstract

413,326. Metallic-vapour apparatus. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London, and WHITAKER, F. P., 237, Clifton Road, Rugby. Jan. 13, 1933, No. 1208. [Class 39 (i).] In a mercury-arc rectifier or similar vapour discharge device, the control of the cooling means for the discharge chamber is responsive to the temperature of the anode or of a part associated therewith, such as the anode stem or seal, the chamber cooling being increased when the anode or the associated part is cool. Preferably, the temperature of the chamber is kept lower than that of the anode. A resistance mounted on the anode seal, and a resistance mounted at the top of the water-cooled part of the discharge tank are connected in the circuit of a Wheatstone bridge. Upon a more rapid rise in the temperature of the tank than in that of the anode seal, the bridge is unbalanced to operate a relay which is adapted to control a contactor to start or accelerate a fan associated with the cooler or to control a cock in the water supply. When the anode reaches a predetermined temperature, a known method of temperature control, e.g. thermostatic control, may be substituted.
