476,501. Thermal switches; discharge apparatus. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., and CARRICK, G. A. June 9, 1936, No. 16134. [Class 38 (v)] [Also in Group XL] A device for protecting air-cooled apparatus such as a rectifier that is cooled by a fan comprises an expansible or vaporizable fluid contained in tubes 3, 4 that carry and are heated by the load current 5. With excessive current a switch 7 is operated closing a circuit 8 to a tripping or controlling device. The device is preferably positioned in the air current between the fan and rectifier so that its temperature is also influenced by the air current and by having two tubes 3, 4 adapted to respond to long and short overloads it has similar thermal characteristics to the rectifier. The tubes 3, 4 may be in series as shown and operate one device, or they may be in parallel and may operate separate controlling mechanisms.
