Abstract

523,689. Thermal switches ; switching systems. SCHILLER, P. Jan. 12, 1939, No. 1070. [Class 38 (v)] [Also in Group XXXV] To limit the load of consumers of electricity the whole or portion of the load is periodically disconnected by a thermal switch when a predetermined load is exceeded, and in order to maintain the resultant mean load as little below the above predetermined level as possible, the relation between the load current and its effect on the thermal element is made to be a function of a lower power than the square of the load current. For example, the effect may vary directly with the load current. In the form shown, when the total load from a supply 16 to consuming devices 17, 18 exceeds the limit a heater 19 included in the circuit operates a thermostat 58 which thereupon cuts out the device 18. The heating effect of the heater 19 on the thermostat would normally be proportional to the square of the current but this relationship is altered according to the invention by causing variations in the current to control valves 62, 63 through an electromagnet 48. These valves admit cold air in and let hot air out and the heat reaching the thermostat is accordingly varied. The required relationship may also be obtained by shunting the heater of the thermal interrupter with an iron core operating along or along and above the bend in the saturation curve. Or a current transformer may be used having such an iron core. Alternatively the heater may be shunted with a resistance that decreases with increasing current.
