Abstract

394,361. Mercury-vapour rectifiers. BRITISH THOMSONHOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London, and WHITAKER, F. P., 237, Clifton Road, Rugby. Dec. 23, 1931, No. 35596. [Class 39 (i).] The anode 1 has a hollow stem 2 directly communicating with a closed cooling chamber 3 to form a combined container for confined circulation of cooling medium which is divided into two portions, one portion 7 circulating in the lower part of the stem 2 and the other portion 6 circulating in the chamber 3 and the upper part of the stem. The portions may be both of the same liquid such as water and may be kept separate by a non-return valve between them allowing vapour to escape from the lower portion. The portions may also be kept separate by using two cooling media of different melting-points and specific gravities ; as shown, the portion 7 is of water and the portion 6 of paraffin wax.
