Abstract

224,288. Heron, S. D. Aug. 7, 1923. Cooling. - Valves of internal combustion engines are cooled by being formed with a closed interior space containing a quantity of a cooling-medium which has a lower fusing temperature, and a higher vaporizing or decomposing temperature, than the working temperature of the valve &c., the quantity being insufficient to fill the space, so that the fused medium is subjected to violent turbulence during working. Fig. 3 shows a valve containing cooling-medium 5. Cooling-fins 6 may also be provided. Potassium, lithium, or sodium, or their nitrates or other salts, or any mixtures of these, may be used as the cooling-medium.
