Abstract

Pole-pieces.-Synchronous salient-pole dynamos or motors are fitted with adjustable magnetic shunts located in grooves formed in adjacent pole sides facing each other whereby the shape of the saturation curve may be adjusted within desired limits. In the form shown, the shunt consists of a packet of laminations a made entirely or in part of magnetic material, and provided with openings c to prevent interference with the machine ventilation. The shunts may be placed at any desired distance from the rotor body by suitably spacing the sections of the field coils and air gaps may be formed in them in the direction of the leakage flux. In highspeed machines, the bridges may be secured to the rotor by radial bolts, for example, by extending the bolts of the wedge-shaped supports which hold the field coils in place. The Provisional Specification states that the shunts may be placed between the outside surfaces of the field winding or may butt against the poles themselves between suitably spaced coil sections; also that they may be placed at the ends of the poles instead of between them.
