Abstract

313,413. Carvalho, J. A. M. de. June 9, 1928, [Convention date]. Movable-abutment type; working-fluid supply. A rotary internal-combustion engine comprises an annular cylinder in which move motor pistons p. P secured to the rim RM of a rotor wheel, which closes the slot in the cylinder, and abutment pistons r, R which can move freely in the cylinder but are at times locked to the cylinder to act as abutments and then projected forward and latched to the rotor rim RM adjacent the motor piston. In the position shown the motor piston p has compressed air against the abutment piston R which is held by three spring studs D (only one of which is shown); the air passes to a recess in the rear of the motor piston p through a passage controlled by a double-beat valve A and into which liquid fuel is injected by a pump b carried on the rotor wheel spokes and actuated by a fixed cam groove gt. A cam-actuated linkage lifts the studs D whereupon the abutment piston R is projected forward by the compressed air remaining behind it, the double-beat valve A closing on the fall of pressure. The abutment piston expels the exhaust gases in front of it and reaching the motor piston P is held there against by a latch T on the rotor rim RM. Meanwhile the other abutment piston r has been unlatched from the rotor rim and locked to the cylinder by the studs D so that the charge in pocket of the piston p can be ignited to drive that piston p. The air admission is controlled by a sliding sleeve cr over the admission ports. The pistons are inserted in the cylinder by opening hinged segments as at u.
