Abstract
312,824. Pleger, J. J. June 15, 1928. Bending, creasing, scoring, and the like.-In a bookbinding- machine a cover sheet conveyed into the machine, either manually or automatically, is advanced between scoring means which press it downwardly along two parallel lines to form folding lines spaced apart in accordance with the thickness of the book and simultaneously press it upwardly along a pair of parallel outer lines to form the hingeing or folding portions of the cover, means being provided for subsequently applying a strip of adhesive to the cover sheet and folding its sides around a book applied thereto. The sheet is advanced by a pair of endless chains 18 provided at spaced intervals with upwardly projecting sheet-engaging lugs 25 and passes between two pairs of upper and lower positioning-rollers 29, Fig. 6, respectively mounted upon shafts 31, 32. the lower shaft 32 being fixed and the upper shaft 31 mounted between the ends of two bell-crank levers 33 pivoted upon a shaft 38, so that the position of the upper-rollers 29 relatively to the lower can be varied by means of nuts 36 on studs 34, passing loosely through the bell-cranks. Behind the rollers 29 are mounted four pairs of scoring-rollers 39, each pair comprising an upper and a lower roller. The upper rollers 39 are carried upon brackets 41 adapted to be adjusted laterally upon a transverse bar 35, vertical adjustment of the rollers being provided by mounting them upon members with screw-threaded limbs extending upwardly through the brackets 41 and carrying adjusting- nuts 48. Positioning rollers 45 mounted upon the bar 35 in a manner similar to that of the upper rollers 39 coact with rollers 44 disposed beneath them on the transverse shaft 43 carrying the lower rollers 39, and, together with the positioning rollers 29, hold the sheets in position during scoring. One of each pair of scoring-rollers is formed with a circumferential groove to receive the rim of the other..
