Abstract
371,079. Binding edges of sheet material. CASSEGRAIN, P. A. G., 67, Boulevard de Metz, Rennes, Ille-et-Vilaine, France. Feb. 9, 1931, No. 4059. Convention date, Feb. 12, 1930. [Class 16.] In apparatus for edging with a strip of paper, fabric, &c., sheets of cardboard, plates of glass, &c., the cardboard sheet or other article is advanced edgewise at right-angles to the paper strip, which it meets in the centre of its width and carries between fixed members, wherebv the strip is turned over on both sides of the leading edge of the sheet, to which it is secured by adhesive, the free ends of the strip being similarly applied to the side edges of the sheet. The edging of the sheet is completed by passing it again through the apparatus with the opposite edge leading. The sheets are contained in a magazine A, Fig. 1, from which the lowest sheet is withdrawn by tappets 10 on an endless chain 7. The edging-device comprises two sets of blocks 11, Fig. 5, mounted on bars 12 and separated by a passage through which the sheet B passes. The distance apart of the two sets of blocks, and of the individual blocks of each set, can be varied to accommodate sheets of different thicknesses and of different widths. At each side of the series of blocks is a device in the form of a half-funnel, narrowing to a horizontal gutter, which is adapted to bend the edging-strip around the corners of the sheet. The paper edging-strip 18 is drawn from a bobbin 19, and passes through a gumming or pasting device 21, and over a block 23, Fig. 9, having an inclined edge, by which the strip is turned, so as to travel horizontally across the path of the sheet. The end of the strip is seized and drawn along by pincers 26 on a carriage 28 sliding on a bar 29. When the strip is released by the pincers, it is held against the face of the blocks 11 by suction-ports 37, Fig. 5, and is then severed by shears 41, 42, Fig. 9. After passing between the blocks 11, which apply the strip, the sheet passes between pressure-rollers C, D, Fig. 1, and is then removed by endless bands 69. The sheet is thus edged on three sides, as shown in Fig. 12.
