Abstract
312,559. Wills, C. M. July 21, 1928, [Convention date]. Ventilators.-A ventilator for the portholes of ships &c. comprises an annular casing 15, a plurality of fixed vertical louvres 37 disposed within the casing with their ends projecting beyond the outer face of the casing to a pro. gressively increasing extent from one end of the casing so as to constitute wind-scoops, and a water-catch 23 carried by the inner lower part of the casing and so arranged that the water collected therein will flow into the casing and be discharged through holes 51 therein. Figs. 3 and 4 show vertical and horizontal sections respectively of the ventilator fitted in a port hole. The water-catch 23 is in the form of a quadrant of a sphere, fixed to a flange 17 of the casing 15, and such catch is provided with a pivoted closure 25. An insect-screen 28 is also removably secured within the water-catch 23. A partition 35 divides the casing into upper and lower compartments, of which the upper space is provided with a glazed closure 49 and the lower compartment is fitted with the louvres 37. The louvres 37 are of Z-shape and are provided with flanges 40, 42 whereby they are riveted to the casing. The ends 39 of the louvres project beyond the outer face of the casing to a progressively greater extent commencing from the front end, so that the ends 39, together with the flange, in the upper, lower and vertical edges 45, 47, form wind-scoops, A stay-bolt 52 locks the louvres together. The device is secured in position by the engagement of the usual porthole locking swing-bolts with recessed members 20 on the casing 15. In a modification the inner ends of the louvres may project into the water-catch 23 and a semi-spherical screen may be mounted over the water-catch in detachable manner. The ventilator shown in Fig. 9 comprises a casing 64 and Z-shaped louvres 75, the inner ends of which project into the water catch 69 and the outer ends are bent as at 77. The louvres are connected to the casing by means of ears 78. In a further modification, the projecting ends of the louvres are connected between inclined upper and lower plates on the casing.
