Abstract

309,377. British Celanese, Ltd., (Assignees of Dreyfus, C.). April 7, 1928, [Convention date]. Addition to 304,596. Yarns &c., treating with liquids, gases, and vapours.-The process for raising the safe ironing- temperature of textile and other materials made of or containing cellulose acetate or other organic acid esters of cellulose as described in the parent Specification, in which process the fabric &c. is partly saponified by means of an alkali solution having an hydroxyl-ion concentration insufficient to cause irregular saponification, addition of further quantities of alkali in order to maintain the concentration during the treatment is obviated by the use, at the commencement, of a quantity of alkali solution greater than 120 times the weight of the materials to be treated, for instance, 130-160 times such weight. Alkali solutions of 0.3-0.7 per cent are suitable, for example, there may be used an amount of alkali corresponding to 4-8 per cent of the weight of the material. The addition of soap to the saponification bath is advantageous. The treatment may be carried out at 60-90‹ C., for example, at 70-80‹ C. For operating the present process and also that of the parent Specification, it is an advantages to add to the alkali solution a buffer salt such as sodium or potassium acetate, or borax; in such cases the concentration of the alkali may be reduced. The treatment may be applied to mixed materials containing natural and other artificial fibres. When applied to materials containing natural silk, the latter may be degummed during the saponification treatment. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) refers to the use of caustic nitrate solutions of up to one per cent concentration. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
