Abstract

Dec. 8, [Cognate Application, 3757/10.] Retting.-Relates to a process for treating vegetable fibres such as kapok (Eriodendron anfractuosum), and similar fibres, calotropis procera, asclepias, &c., most of which are known as cotton silks and have a smooth surface, to remove incrusting substances therefrom and to produce a rough surface, so that the materials may be uniformly dyed and spun. The incrusting substances may be removed by alcohol, ether, acetone, carbon disulphide, benzine, benzole, or its homologues, an aqueous solution, usually 1 per cent, of turkey red oil, glycerine, soap, or glue, preferably at a temperature of from 60‹ to nearly 100‹ C. A small quantity of alkali, colouring-matter, and substances having a bleaching-action, such as hydrogen peroxide, may be added when aqueous solutions are used. If glue is used, it is preferable first to treat the material with dilute tanning - liquor. Hot or boiling water is sufficient when the materials are to be mixed with other fibres, particularly with cotton. 1 to 10 per cent of acid, hydrochloric or sulphuric, may be added to the water.
