Description

Patented July 16, 1935 STATES PROCESS FOR INCREASING THE WETTING- OUT POWER. OF ALKALINE LYES Heinrich Lier, Basel, Switzerland, assignor to the firm of Chemical Works Formerly Sandoz,
Basel, Switzerland No Drawing. Application January 3, 1931, Serial No 506,507. In Germany'January 16, 1930 11 Claims.
I have found that very valuable wetting-out preparations, which-possess a great efiicacy when being used in alkaline solutions like mercerizing lyes can be prepared by mixing phenols, like phenol, cresols, xylenols, chlorophenols or mixtures thereof,- like the so-called' technical tar cresol mixture consisting of cresols, xylenols and other higher phenol homologues, with aliphatic, araliphatic and cyclic ketones and their derivatives containing thealiphatic linked hydroxyl group. Such compounds are for instance acetone, acetone-homologues (technical acetone oil, technical ketone mixtures as obtained accordin to U. S. Patent No. 1,656,488), cyclopentanone, cyclohexanone, methylcyclohexanone, camphor, diacetonealcohol and the like.
The mixtures thus obtained constitute more or less colored solutions easily soluble in alkaline solutions, but almost insoluble in water. When added to alkaline lyes, the mixtures impart to them very durable wetting-out properties, which are not affected by the temperatures generally used in mercerizing processes. In order to obtain the desired effect, the above described mixtures are added in suitable quantities to the alkaline lyes of various concentrations or the mixtures are generated therein by adding their constituents under good stirring. 7
According-to the present invention it is possible to mercerize dry raw sized cotton fibres very rapidly and to obtain a very high lustre in a single treatment. a
The following examples, without being limi- -tative, illustrate the new process. the parts being by weight:
Example 1 An excellent wetting-out preparation'is prepared by mixing 92% of technical tar cresol mixture with 8% of camphor. When added to a caustic soda solution of e. g. 30 B./the new preparation increases its wetting-out properties in such away that it immediately impregnates raw dry cotton fabrics, for instance strongly twisted yarns.
Example 2 cording to the process of the U. S. Patent 1,656,- 488 and known under the trade name Ketol may be advantageously used.
Example 3 To 100 parts of a caustic soda solution of 30 B. are added 1.5 parts of a mixture consisting of 89% of technical tar cresol mixture and of 11% of acetophenone. The wetting-out action of the solution thus obtained is so great that raw dry cotton fabrics and'yarns are impregnated in a few seconds and shrink very rapidly.
What I claim is:- v 1. A process for markedly increasing the wetting-out power of alkaline lyes consisting in adding phenols and ketones to said alkaline 'lyes.
2. A process for markedly increasing the wetting-out power of alkaline lyes consisting in adding admixtures of phenols and ketones to said alkaline lyes.
3. A process for markedly increasing the wetting-out power of alkaline lyes consisting in adding an admixture of phenol and ketone to said alkaline lyes, the phenol-content of said admixture being greater than that of the ketone content thereof.
4. A process for markedly increasing the wetting-out power of alkaline lyes consisting in adding an admixture of phenols and camphor to said alkaline lyes, the phenols-content of said admixture being greater than that of the camphor content thereof.
5. A process for markedly increasing the wetting-out power of alkaline lyes consisting in adding an admixture of phenols and acetone oil to said alkaline lyes, the phenols-content of said admixture being greater than the acetone oil content thereof.
6. A process for markedly increasing the wetting-out power of alkaline lyes consisting in add- .ing an admixture of phenols and acetophenone to said alkaline lyes, the phenols-content of said admixture being greater than the acetophenone content thereof.
7. A process for markedly increasing the wetting-out power of mercerizing caustic soda lyes, consisting in adding to the latter a mixture consisting of about 92 parts of technical cresol mix-,
ture and about 8 parts of camphor.
8. A process for markedly increasing thewetting-out power of mercerizing caustic, soda lyes, consisting in adding to the latter a mixture consisting of about parts of technical cresol mixture and about 25 parts of acetone oil.
9. A process for markedly increasing the wetting-out power or mercerizing caustic soda lyes, fibers to the action of an alkaline lye containing consisting in adding to the latter a mixture cona phenol and a ketone. sisting of about 89 parts of technical cresol mix- 11.
