Abstract

307,996. Bailey, R. W., and Metropolitan-Vickers Electrical Co., Ltd. Dec. 28, 1927. Cylinders receiving liquid fuel.-In a cylinder having a combustion chamber which is circular in transverse section, the axis AA of an air inlet valve 1 is inclined to the radial plane BB; the valve seating 3 is formed in a recess 4 and screened on one side and thus the air is whirled in the direction of the arrows b, c. The inclination of the valve is preferably such that the dimension a is half the diameter of the valve head. The face of the valve when open may be flush with the edge of the recess 4, or the recess may be set back and formed so as to cause the air flowing past it to be deflected in the direction of the arrows c. Two or more valves may be thus arranged symmetrically or not in the combustion chamber and they may slope, as shown in Fig. 5, towards the cylinder head which is preferably conical and has a large central exhaust valve 7; pockets 5 are formed in the piston to clear the valves. The liquid-fuel valve 8 is arranged to deliver fuel as shown in Fig. 1. The invention is specially applicable to an engine for producing combustion products for use in a separate prime mover as described in Specifications 232,278, 244,215, and 245,541, [all in Class 7 (ii), Internal-combustion engines, Arrangement &c. of].
