Abstract
306,934. Kiess, O. Feb. 28, 1928, [Convention date]. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts]. Variable-speed gearing upon vehicles is operated so that the effort for changing gear and also for disconnecting the main clutch is supplied by the engine. A cam barrel 32 driven from the engine shaft 1 when required operates both the selector bars 25, 27 and the lever 63 which disconnects the engine clutch 9 through sleeve 14. A disc 8 fast upon the driving-shaft 11 of the change-speed gear A is normally gripped between the fly-wheel 2 and a ring 3 pressed by springs 5. A face cam 62 on barrel 32 opens this clutch. The barrel 32 is operated as required from a shaft 46 con. stantly driven through worm gearing 43 from a gear 45 secured to clutch casing 4 in turn fast to fly-wheel 2. The barrel 32 is adapted to be driven from a stepped gear 47 splined on shaft 46 at two speeds, a low speed for putting in the direct and reversed drives and a higher speed for putting in the two middle speeds. In the change gear A, a gear and clutch 22 and a pinion 21 are severally connected to slide with the selector bars 27, 25. The barrel 32 has two gear-changing cam grooves 52, 53 which act selectively upon a pin 35 supported in a sliding guide 33. Selective and trigger control move. ments are started by a ball lever 41 and are guided by a pin 69 guided in an H slot or gate 68 in the gear-case cover. The pin 69 is carried by a lever 37 which pivots on cam follower 35. Fitting over lever 37 so as to slide thereon is a rack slider 39 carrying a socket 39<1> engaged by the ball end of control lever 41. Movement of lever 41 perpendicular to the plane of Fig. 1 causes the bars 27, 25 to be selectively engaged by horns 38 upon swing lever 37. The trigger movement of lever 41 in the plane of Fig. 1 places the heel of pin 35 either at point 58 or at point 59 of Fig. 13. The gear 47 is engaged only momentarily to turn the barrel, and this is effected through the heel of the pin 35 being cut away as shown in Fig. 10 so that as pin 35 is turned round by rack slider 39, there is lost motion enough for the gear 47 to be thrown to one side or the other through lever 54. The cam 62 acts on the main clutch at the same time as either groove 52 or groove 53, as selected, acts on the pin 35 to effect the required gear-change as a power enforcement following the initial movement of control lever 41.
