Abstract
424,835. Friction clutches ; variablespeed gearing. DELL, C., 25, Swing Gate Lane, Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, and READ, H. L., Netherton, Herington Grove, Hutton Mount, near Brentwood, Essex. Aug. 1, 1933, No. 21599. [Class 80 (ii)] A core member 6 splined on a driven (or driving) shaft 1 is formed with a number of double-cam faces 7 between which and a cylindrical bore of a driving (or driven) member are arranged wedging balls or rollers 9, the latter being held in a cage 10 mounted on the core so as to be freely rotatable but not slidable thereon. The core is normally held centrally between collars 2, 3 fixed to the shaft 1 by interposed springs 8, the collars having V-shaped projections 33 co-operating with corresponding notches in the cage. The drive is thus bidirectional. If the shaft 1 is moved axially in either direction during drive, the core at first lags behind and the projections 33 on one of the collars enter into the corresponding notches of the cage, whereby the latter is turned so as to move the rollers out of wedging position, so that they may be moved out of the driving bore. The application to a constant-mesh gear box is shown, the driven shaft 1 being axially movable so as to move the core within the coaxial bores of the driving gears 18, 19, 20, 25 or into a neutral bore 32.
