Abstract

255,855. Sperry Development Co., (Assignees of Sperry, E. A.). July 25, 1925. [Convention date]. Automatic speed or power control; interlocking and guarding against wrong movements.-A drive for motor vehicles comprises a direct driving connection between driving and driven shafts, an indirect connection through hydraulic apparatus, and manual or automatic means for changing from one to the other. The direct connection between the shafts consists of a clutch member 77, Fig. 8. carried by the casing and a slidable clutch member 78 on the driven shaft. The member 78 is moved by a lever 79 acted on by a spring 83 and having a pin adapted to be engaged by the fork 80 of a lever 80<1>, Fig. 9, a detent 84 being provided, which in the position shown prevents the engagement of the clutch members. When the lever 80<1> is operated to engage a pin 82 to put a mechanical reverse gear into operation, a pivoted member 85 is operated to prevent the detent 84 from being moved out of the position shown, so that the direct drive cannot be put into operation. When the forward drive is in operation, the position of the detent 84 is determined by a link 87 connected to a friction strap surrounding a rotatable member 91, Fig. 6, operated by bevel gears on the driving and driven shafts in engagement with a bevel gear 90. Mechanism is also provided for throwing the direct drive out of operation, when the engine shaft does not accelerate in response to the depression of the throttle pedal 134, Fig. 9. A pinion 107<1> meshing with a pinion 107 on the driving shaft has a spring driving connection with a cam disc 105, so that when the shalt is being accelerated the disc lags, a spiral cam groove then acting through a lever 120 to protrude a member 113 into the dotted line position. The depression of the pedal 134 allows a member 132 to be moved up by a spring; if the member 113 has not been protruded this movement continues until a shoulder 131<1> engages a cam surface on the disc 105, whereupon the member 132 is moved to the right and a member 136 forces the lever 80' into position to cut out the direct drive. A dashpot 140 prevents too rapid movement of the member 132. In order that the direct drive may not be cut out after acceleration ceases. if a predetermined speed has been attained, a dog 141 is adapted to engage a notch 143, the dog being allowed to move towards the member 132 under spring action when the pedal is depressed. A dashpot 147 is provided to time the movement so that the dog cannot reach engaging position until after the member 132 has engaged the member 113.
