Facilitating changing speed. - An isolating clutch 16, Fig. 1, between the change-speed gear of a vehicle and a tail shaft 12 is operated by an extension arm 25, which oscillates about the pivot axis. of the changespeed lever 24. The arm 25 is secured to the pivot shaft 26 of the lever 24, which shaft slides axially to select by an arm 23, Fig. 2, a guide finger 23<a> moving in a gate 23<b>. A cam 22 is pivoted upon the arm 25 with lost motion between the two pins 27, 28. In neutral, as shown in Fig. 1, the clutch 16 is held out against the pull of spring 29 by cam 22 engaging a bowl 21 on lever 19. To engage a gear pair, the lever 24 moves freely far enough to start enmeshing. The bowl 21 then rides on to an incline 22<b>, which flies back, so that there is a rapid engagement of the clutch 16. The clutch 16 may be a dog clutch, as shown, or a friction clutch.
