Signs ; name plates and the like.-Signs which utilize reflected daylight and of the kind having a top stencil, a front stencil with an inclined mirror, or a front stencil backed by a parallel mirror are provided with a stencil sheet the rear face of which forms a reflecting surface or surfaces, one or both faces are roughened or provided with a variety of refracting surfaces and the part or parts between the mirrored areas permit the passage of light. As applied to a sign having a front stencil with an inclined mirror 2, the stencil sheet comprises a stencil 1 behind which is placed a partly reflecting partly translucent sheet 3 which may be formed of a glass sheet having a hammered, stippled. &c. front surface 7, Fig. 4. the rear surface 5, Fig. 5, being mirrored with the mirroring removed to form transparent portions 6 through which light can pass. The sign is illuminated from above by daylight passing through the transparent portions of the stencil sheet and can also be made clearly legible after dark by light from headlamps &c. striking the stencil and being reflected back by the mirrored portions. The rear surface of the roughened glass sheet may have the raised portions 7, Fig. 7, mirrored and the sunk portions 8 clear or vice versa. Specification 303,217 is referred to.
