Signs; name and number plates.-A sign, comprising reflective and translucent characters, is mounted in front of a lamp casing f at such an angle that daylight received from above is reflected directly by the reflective characters to the observer, while the translucent characters transmit artificial light at night from a lamp e in the casing. In the illustrated form the transparent characters form a border a' to the reflective characters which may be coloured by the interposition of a coloured translucent glass plate. In addition, fine cuts a<2> may be made in the mirroring to illuminate the main body of the letters at night. Daylight passing through the forwardlyprojecting coloured translucent screen h is reflected downwards directly by the main body of the letters. The sign characters may be formed by a stencil or by blocking out margins on a clear glass plate, while the transparent borders may be formed by removing silvering or making the silvered portions smaller than the stencil. The sign may also be made in duplex form.
