Cylinders, heads, liners, ports, and passages of, mounting and cooling; frames. - The liners of the cylinders of double-acting engines are constructed in two parts g, g<1>, either integral with, or directly bolted to, the heads a, a<1>, which are connected together by long bolts b b. The bolts extend to the frame e and the heads are spaced, either by distance pieces c, expansion joints o being provided between the parts g, g<1> which are rabbeted to slide as shown, or by the parts g, g<1> the edges then abutting and in this case the bolts take up heat expansion. Water jackets, also in two parts f, f<1> are fixed to the heads at n, n<1>, and slide at p, p<1>. In a two-stroke-cycle engine, Fig. 4, the ports f, f<1> are arranged to form passages v, v<1> communicating with opposed inlet and exhaust ports t. Alternatively the ports may be in one row, serving both ends of the cylinder and they may be formed in a separate part of the cylinder inserted between the parts g, g<1>. The sides of the heads a, a<1> are formed flat so that they can be bolted together to form a block, and the bolts b may each serve a pair of cylinders as shown in Fig. 4.
