Abstract

296,223. Craigon, A. Nov. 5, 1927. Pistons; cooling; crossheads. - In an internalcombustion engine two cylinders are arranged sideby-side and have trunk pistons 6 working over fixed abutments 16, combustion chambers being formed above the pistons and inside the trunks. Each trunk piston is cooled by circulating oil through channels formed in the trunk and communicating with inlet and outlet pipes 45 in the hollow head. The oil is supplied by telescopic piping. To further cool the trunks shaped water jackets 46 are mounted on the open frame members 3, to embrace the trunks as they reciprocate. The single rod works on a gudgeon 8 which is supported in bosses formed in two plates 12, Fig. 8, connecting the two pistons at their lower ends; one plate is in front as shown and the other behind the two pistons. The pistons and plates have corresponding ribs 13, 14 which take the driving strain off the attaching bolts 15.
