Abstract

311,191. Brock, W. H. Nov. 7, 1927. Four-stroke-cycle engines; driving-gear. - A double-acting engine comprises units made up of two pairs of aligned cylinders 1, 2, 3, 4, a doubleended piston working in each pair; a gudgeon 17 passes freely through the two pistons and through slots in the cylinder walls. It is connected directly to the crank shaft through outside rods 18, 19. The rods are fixed to the gudgeon, the latter oscillating in the pistons. The four combustion chambers fire in sequence so that a compression is taking place at one, end of the engine for each power stroke at the other end. Cylinders, mounting. - The cylinders are attached to the crank case by holding down bolts 9, 10, the latter serving to position the bottom half-bearings of the crank shaft. The valve rods such as 23, 24 for each pair of upper and lower valves are in alignment; all the valves are worked from a common control crank shaft 31 through two armed levers such as 33, 36.
