Propelling. - An aircraft propeller shaft is driven through bevel gearing 7, 7', 8 from engines with cylinders in line and arranged with their shafts perpendicular and radial to the propeller shaft and preferably transversely of the machine. A second pair of engines may be added and clutches provided so that either pair may be clutched to the propeller shaft, or a larger number may be provided and connected individually or collectively with the propeller shaft. The propeller shaft is shown hollow to enable machine guns to be fired through it.
