Pneumatic separating.-In pneumatic separating apparatus, the air after passing through the separator is returned to the fan through a dustcollecting chamber so constructed that the air is suddenly expanded, travels through the chamber without change of direction, is again expanded and reverses its direction as it leaves the chamber. Fig. 2 shows one form of apparatus. The air from the separator enters a chamber b by a narrow passage d, the consequent expansion depositing dust in the pockets c with discharge conveyers f. At the top of the chamber adjustable plates g again compress the air which is expanded in the cover i and reverses its direction in passing to the off-takes h leading to the fan. Flaps k prevent deposit of dust in the suction pockets formed by the plates g. The cover is open at the bottom to avoid undue variation of pressure in the chamber. Fig. 4 shows a modification in which the off-takes h to the fan are arranged along the middle line of the chamber, and adjustable and extensible plates q are hinged a short distance from the sides to allow dust to slide down into the pockets e. Vent slots l which can be more or less closed by slides are provided in the sides of the chamber.
