Pneumatic separation. - In apparatus as described in the parent Specification, the material to be separated is delivered from a hopper 3 in a substantially horizontal direction towards the rear wall 8 of a shaft 6 up which the light impurities are carried by an air current delivered through the passage 14 which may be provided with an adjustable hinged flap 15. The delivery plate of the hopper is preferably turned up as shown at 5. The heavy constituents of the material fall into and are discharged from a chamber 12 which may have an inclined bottom 13. The air laden with the light constituents passes up the shaft 6, which may be adjustable in height by the provision of a slide 9 on the wall 8, into an expansion chamber with a downcast shaft 18 into which the next grade of material falls. This chamber is in communication with a dust depositing cham ber 27 by a passage controlled by adjustable hinged flaps 20, 23. The air freed substantially of suspended matter returns to the fan 33 by way of the hinged flap 30 and passage 32, and is passed again to the separating point by way of the passages 34 and 14. Matter deposited in the passage 34 is carried by an openwork conveyer 35 to the conveyer 38 and an air-lock discharge valve.
