Abstract

297,459. Delco-Remy Corporation, (Assignees of Aseltine, F. E., and Teeter, W. H.). Sept. 22, 1927, [Convention date]. Dashpots. - In a carburetting apparatus provided with a spring-loaded suction-actuated main air inlet valve 33, the movements of the valve are retarded by a dashpot, to provide for enriching the mixture on acceleration, and to prevent fluttering of the valve when the throttle is suddenly opened. The dashpot comprises a cylinder 170, Figs. 9 and 10, adjustable in a sleeve 184 in the float chamber, holes 185, 186, being provided in the sleeve and in the cylinder below the fuel level. Within the cylinder is a piston 171, Fig. 14, sliding on a piston rod 172 secured to the lower end of the air valve spindle 150. The piston rod has a flange 174 against a rim 175 on which the piston is normally pressed by a spring 176 bearing against an adjustable nut 177. The piston and flange have holes 178 - - 180, a check valve 181 for the latter being provided. A by-pass 187, Fig. 10, has its upper end normally covered by the piston. When the throttle is opened at low or intermediate speeds, suction is transmitted to the valve 33, and it descends but not with sufficient force to compress the spring 176; the movement at first is therefore slow. As the by-pass 187 is uncovered however, the fluid resistance is reduced and the valve opens more rapidly. The greater the throttle opening at the time of acceleration, the less will be the retarding action. Under certain conditions, e.g. coasting, when there is a very sudden increase in depression on reaching a level or an incline, it is not desirable to retard the opening movement. In such a case, the vacuum is great enough to compress the spring 176 so that the flange 174 is separated from the piston permitting escape of fuel through holes 178. To provide an additional retardation, the dashpot 'cylinder may be raised as the throttle is opened by a bifurcated arm 192, Figs. 9 and 10, which is actuated from the shaft of the throttle valve.
