Ball-and-ring mills; conical mills ; mills and apparatus.-An apparatus for grinding &c. materials comprises a casing b having a horizontal and plane surface, a crushing element a having a lower horizontal and plane surface and balls d located in concentric circles between the horizontal surface of the casing and the lower surface of the crushing element and in such manner that the force exerted by the balls upon the material being treated as it passes successively from one ring of balls to the next outer ring of balls increases as the centrifugal force increases. The portion a of the mill is attached slidably to the driving shaft c by a disc h and is adjustable along the shaft bv means of a screw ! i which passes through a bridge piece g attached to the disc h. A hopper k is attached to the rotary portion a and feeds the material to be ground to a preliminary crushing element formed by channels a<1>, b<1>, in the rotary portion a and the hub of the casing b respectively. The crushed material is further ground by the balls d and is delivered through a channel f in the casing b, the discharge of the ground material being accelerated by collectors e, Fig.. 4. Oil may be introduced into the apparatus when grinding colours for paints.
