Disc and like mills.-Relates to grinding, mixing, or incorporating mills for treating liquids or semi-liquid substances such as paints, colours, enamels, varnishes, dyes, printing-inks, pottery slip, chocolate, emulsions, and other pastes. The mill comprises an enclosed stationary grinding-chamber A, Figs. 1 and 3, with a fixed vertical grinding ring or disc B fitted therein, a feed hopper or pipe C feeding into a central eye b in the disc B, a rotary vertical grinding ring or disc D mounted on the end of an horizontal shaft G extending out of the other side of the casing, and a discharge so placed that the contents of the chamber A are maintained at a high level during grinding to dissipate and dispense the heat generated, with a relief or circulating or discharge column or pipe H placed in or at the top of the chamber A. The rings or discs B, D are formed with two or more distinct grinding-areas d, d<1>, Fig. 6, divided by a plain or uncut ring b<2>, and a similar ring b<1> at the peripheral edge. The chamber A is provided with a discharge aperture or valve a preferably about on a level with the feed-inlet c, and with a second discharge aperture and valve a<1> in the bottom, through either of which the ground material may be discharged at a continuous and constant speed. A pipe is fitted to etiher or both ducts a, a<1> to maintain the material at any desired level within the chamber A, and the pressurerelief column or pipe H, at the top of the chamber may be turned over the hopper C to form a circulation pipe. The pressure of the disc D against the disc B is regulated by a worm K engaging a worm-wheel M at the end of the driving- shaft G. A fine-pitch screw on the boss m of the wheel M screws into a fixed bearing N, and the end of the shaft G, or a shoulder thereon, bears against an anti-friction thrust bearing on the face of the wheel M.
