Disc mills.-In a mill for grinding paints, pigments, pastes, &c. and of the type comprising coaxially mounted rotatable and non-rotatable 'discs, the non-rotatable disc is adjusted by means of a worm coacting with a worm-wheel screwing on, and engaging as a nut with, a spindle which carries the disc and is splined in a suitable support so that it can be moved axially by operation of the worm-wheel, which may be adapted to be locked in order to lock the disc at the desired setting. As shown, the hollow spindle 8 of the stationary disc 9 is splined on a key 10 in a boss 6a in the upper part of the mill casing 6, and is secured at its upper end to receive a. nut in the form of a worm-wheel 11 which can be rotated by means of a worm 12 mounted in bearings 13 and operated by a milled head 12a. The shank 18 of the rotary disc 19 is secured in the hollow end of the driving-shaft 16 by means of a cotter pin 20. Preferably the shank 18 is tapered adjacent the disc 19 and the interior of the shaft 16 correspondingly shaped. The discs 9, 19 are formed with concave and convex faces respectively and have radial teeth or serrations 9a, 19a tapering in depth towards the periphery. A locking-ring 22 screwing into the bracket 7 on the casing 6 is screwed down upon the wheel 11 to prevent further rotation thereof, after adjusting the disc 9. A nut 23 may be provided for locking the ring 22. A stop may be provided for the wheel 11 to prevent the disc 9 from contacting with the disc 19, and a spring 25 may bear at one end against the underside of the upper portion of the casing 6 and at the other against the disc 9. The material to be ground is fed through the hollow spindle 8, and the ground product escapes from between the peripheral edges of the discs into the casing 4 from which it is discharged through an outlet 4a.
