[Class 59] Fluid under pressure is injected into a pulverizing chamber to rotate and pulverize a mass of material therein, the fine material being classified by the action of centrifugal force opposing the force exerted on the material by the pressure fluid as it escapes towards a co-axially disposed outlet. As shown the steam &c. jets 14 are mounted on a conduit 6 adjustable vertically into holes 24 or 241 by discs 12 on a screwed rod 13 bearing on the ends of screwed rods 8 which support the conduit. The holes 24 in the attrition ring 23 for the nozzles 14 are Venturi-shaped and are inclined so that the jets are tangential to a circular path 30. A collector 25 extends upwardly through the centre of the ring 23 and is surrounded by a false bottom 16 adjustable by screwed discs 21. The ring 23 is enclosed by a casing 1 and has an outlet 31 for the dustless gaseous fluid and an hopper 34 for the material to be ground which is forced into the chamber 29 by a jet 35. A flange 38 on the collector 25 retards the flow of large pieces of material into the collector. Material within the ring 23 is forced to revolve in a path A by the jets 14 and ground against the serrated sides of the ring and against the particles contained therein. The heavy particles are centrifuged towards the serrations whilst the fine material flows over the top of the collector 25 and due to its whirling motion descends down the sides whilst the dustless gaseous fluid leaves at 31. Some of the heavy particles overflow the ring 23 into the chamber 39 and when they reach the level of the jets 14 are blown into the ring 23 so that the feeder 35 may if desired discharge into the chamber 39. The fineness of grinding may be varied according to the feed and height of false bottom 16. The ring 23 may be dispensed with and the casing may have various shapes. The conduits 6 may be in pairs the jets being inclined toward one another to produce a rotary motion of the material, they may also project onto a flat surface. The jets may be arranged spirally to produce a cylindrical blast.
