Capsules; v a c u u m closures.-A closure for bottles, jars, &. consists of a cap 17 having a top portion 18 terminating in a downwardly stepped annular portion which provides a flat shoulder 21 for the reception of a packing ring 22, the packing ring being ultimately confined between the walls 11, 12 of an annular recess around the bottle mouth, the shoulder 21, and a vertical flange 19 which depends from the top portion 18 and is provided at its lower edge with corrugations 20. The cap is pressed down by pressure applied on the shoulder 21 to expand the packing ring 22 against the walls 21, 11 and then is drawn down further by pressure applied at an angle, this pressure being applied by turning the corrugations 20 inwards beneath a rounded shoulder 16 on the bottle &c. A rib 14 may encircle the bottle neck below and in proximity to the shoulder 16, to allow the cap to be levered off the bottle by a coin. The cap may be applied as a vacuum closure and may be used repeatedly after its first removal.
