Abstract

Universal joints.-The fork-elements of a universal joint are interconnected by a pair of L-shaped hinge - pins, oppositely disposed in the same plane, the centre lines of the pins intersecting at a common point. The fork-elements are made by doubling over a pair of interchangeable plates 1, Fig. 2, each having a central slot 2 and pressed-up arches 6, which, when the plate is folded, form bearings for the rounded L-shaped connecting-pins 7, Fig. 4, inserted during the folding. The plates may be rectangular, oval, or shaped as shown, with end extensions 3 arched to embrace the shafts 9 and secured together and to the shafts by screws 10. Alternatively, the ends 3 may be bent to form a U or V, as shown in Fig. 8, to engage similarly-shaped shaft ends, and flanged bushes 13 may be provided to prevent end play of the pins 7. In another form, the ends 3 are brought together and received in slots in the shaft ends, and screws are inserted radially into the ends of the pins 7 to secure them, Fig. 6 (not shown). Where quick dismantling is not necessary, the screws 10 may be replaced by rivets and the stiffening-flanges 8 permanently secured together.
