Abstract
201,670. Baumann, K., and Metropolitan-Vickers Electrical Co., Ltd. May 15, 1922. Universal joints.-In universal shaft couplings for permitting eccentric and angular misalignment, of the type in which resilient annular diaphragms are mounted at or near the shaft ends and are united by a torsionally-rigid distance piece, this distance piece connects the outer peripheries of the diaphragms. Flexible diaphragms 5, Fig. 2, integral with sleeves 6, are united peripherally by a split cylindrical distance piece 7 of considerable length and of uniform diameter or, as shown, comprising a barrel 9 and rigid or flexible flanges 8 integral therewith or secured thereto. As shown in Fig. 3, the flanges 8 are flexible and detachable, the split distance piece 7 having at its joint integral or other flanges 11, at least one of which is flexible. Intermediate flexible flanges may also be applied to the form shown in Fig. 2, and may extend inwardly when the member 7 is not of the channel shape shown. The diaphragms 5 may be mounted at any point in the length of the sleeves 6 and, instead of being integral, may be rigidly secured thereto. According to the Provisional Specification, when the flanges 8 are flexible, the diaphragms 5 may be rigid. Specification 27712/02 is referred to.
