Abstract
472,151. Universal joints. AGREN, E. M. Feb. 12, 1937, No. 4239. Convention date, Feb. 12, 1936. [Class 80 (ii)] One or more U-shaped steel bars 6 is or are hinged substantially diametrically to one shaft-member 1, and is or are stressed torsionally by the driving torque, acting through legs 5, projecting axially from each bar into engagement with rounded openings 12 in the other shaft-member 2, such engagement permitting relative axial, radial and circumferential movement of the legs in the openings. When two bars are used, they may be at right-angles, or parallel, side-by-side. The openings 12 may, as shown, be open-ended grooves in axially projecting lugs, in which case the shaft members may be separated by relative radial movement only. The bar 6 is pivotally retained on the member 1 by means of flushfitting, bolted plates 8. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 states also that the bar 6 may be formed as a closed rectangle, or be replaced by a rectangular plate. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
