Abstract

419,792. Friction clutches. GILLIES, A. J., 121, Prescott Avenue, Toronto, Canada. April 23, 1934, No. 12216. [Class 80 (ii).] In a centrifugal friction clutch comprising centrifugal blocks 7 radially guided on a driving member 1 and co-operating with the drum 4 of a driven member 3, the blocks are interconnected, so as to move in unison, by cylindrical pins 11 fitting closely in cylindrical holes 10 in the adjacent sides of each pair of blocks, and loose segments 8 of friction material are interposed between the blocks and the drum. Each pin 11 may be slidable in both of the holes in which it fits or may be fixed in one of them. The blocks 7 are slidable on radial pins 6 carried by a sleeve 20 loosely mounted on the hub 2 of the driving flange 1 and are guided at their outer ends by lugs 9 which project from the flange 1 and which serve also to guide the segments 8. The sides of the lugs 9 are parallel to the direction of movement of the adjacent blocks. Springs 13, adjustable by nuts 12, serve normally to hold the blocks in retracted position. A window, provided with a removable closure 15, is formed in the member 3 for the purpose of removing and replacing the segments 8. The pins 11 co-operate with the lugs 9 to prevent the blocks 7 from contacting with the drum when the segments 8 wear through. Linings 17 of fibre or like material are provided to reduce chatter, one of the linings being backed by a spring 18. Means allowing manual operation may be provided.
