Abstract

410,627. Friction clutches. SCHKOMMODAU, F., 209, Bachemerstrasse, Lindenthal, Cologne, Germany. June 20, 1933, No. 17598. Convention date, Dec. 10, 1932. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Dec. 27, 1933.] [Class 80 (ii).] A friction clutch comprises one or more loose split friction rings r which surround split rings h rotating with a-sleeve d keyed to the driving shaft a and adapted to be expanded by a longitudinally-slidable wedge i, engaging between the split ends of the rings h, so as to expand the rings r into contact with a driven drum k, a helical spring o having one end p pivotally secured to the sleeve d while its other end o<1> is engaged by an abutment r<1> on the adjacent ring r. The arrangement is such that, on actuation of the wedge i, the rings r expand to take up the drive. When the friction between the end ring r and the drum. reaches a predetermined value, the abutments r<1> causes the helical spring o to unwind into contact with the drum and participate in the drive. The wedge i, actuated by a collar m splined on the shaft a, may engage the split ends of the rings h through loose shoes, and has a parallel-sided portion g engaging a longitudinal groove in the sleeve d. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, the helical spring o and the loose rings r may be omitted, the rings h coacting directly with the drum k ; the wedge i may be arranged to act radially, or may be of stepped formation so that the rings h may be expanded successively ; or the arrangement may be such that the rings h are carried by the drum k and are adapted to be contracted into engagement with the sleeve d by a wedge. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
