Capsules for bottles comprise a skirted cap 2 placed over the enlarged mouth of a bottle and a length of string &c. 7 drawn around the skirt, and secured, under tension to contract it, by a patch of sealing wax or other cement 8 applied over the'ends and to the skirt to secure them together and to the skirt. Preferably the ends overlap one another and the cement is applied directly to both the ends and the skirt.
