Catches, automatic; striking-plates for locks and latches; stud-andslot fastenings. - A fastening suitable for suitcases, boxes, trunks &c. generally but described as applied to an expanding suitcase of the kind described in Specification 295,247 comprises a sliding plate 53 mounted in a casing 14 and biased to the left by springs 56, the plate having an external operating knob 16 and an inwardly projecting headed stud 15 adapted to engage with a slotted striking-plate, Fig. 4. The head of the stud passes through an enlargement 52 of the slot, and the shank passes down the slot 18, being moved to the right against the action of springs 56 by engagement with the inclined side 49 of the slot and finally snapping into fastened position in a horizontal portion 50 of the slot. The casing 14 is mounted on and let into the lid of the case, and the striking plate embraces the upper edge of the body of the case which is suitably cut away to leave the slot clear. As shown the catch may be secured against withdrawal by a key operated lock comprising a sliding bolt 58 adapted when shot to the left to bear against and prevent movement of stud 15, the bolt being held in its shot and unshot positions by a pivoted lever 64 of usual type. The catch may be modified so as to be engaged automatically released only by means of a key.
