292,056. British Dyestuffs Corporation, Ltd., Payman, J. B., and Gibson, W. March 4, 1927. Divided on 291,849. Chlorinated naphthalene. - Naphthalene is chlorinated by passing chlorine gas into a solution of naphthalene in carbon tetrachloride or similar solvent at about 5‹ C. in the presence of a small amount of an inorganic chlorine carrier such as ferric chloride. The chlorination may be carried out in the presence of absence of light. When the desired amount of chlorine has been absorbed the product is distilled under reduced pressure. An example is given in which chlorine is added till an increase in weight corresponding to four atoms of chlorine is reached.
