Abstract
291,748. I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.- Ges. June 7, 1927, [Convention date]. Butadiene and its homologues are obtained by passing the vapour of 1 : 3-butylene glycol or a homologue thereof, preferably mixed with a diluting gas or vapour such as steam, over dehydrated alum at a raised temperature. In an example, butylene glycol containing 20 per cent of water is vaporized and passed through a tube heated to 240-250‹ C. and containing potash dehydrated at 150-180‹ C. A small quantity of oily intermediate products (allyl carbinol and other unsaturated alcohols and ethers thereof) are separated and may be again passed over the catalyst to produce more butadiene, and the hydrocarbon is liquefied by strong cooling or pressure. In a similar manner a-a-dimethylbutadiene may be prepared from 2-methylpentandiol-1-2 : 4. German Specification 261,642 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) states that ammonium alum or a mixture of alums may be used instead of potash alums. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
